This essential webinar series explores the impact of current cancer research, therapies and treatments within the oncology continuum, and the emergence of cancer rehabilitation as a specialty area of practice within rehabilitative medicine. Rehabilitation services play a vital role in adding value to the medical continuum of oncology care. Integrating rehabilitation services within the continuum of care allows providers the opportunity to employ an interdisciplinary approach to address critical components of function that are often overlooked or undertreated.

The enhanced role of rehabilitation services within the continuum of oncology care will further challenge the long-established parameters of service setting, modeling, and delivery. These innovations will require providers to think strategically and systemically in order to meet the complex needs of individuals with cancer through person-centered care. This webinar series prepares providers to meet these challenges with keen guidance and insight on how to effectively plan and integrate specialized rehabilitation services into the continuum of care in order to promote optimal outcomes for individuals and enhance service efficacy and efficiency.

Designed to benefit direct service professionals and administrators, the “Meeting the Challenge” webinar series provides participants with the latest research and analysis of integrated therapies and treatments, clinical practice guidelines, policy drivers and implications, development of comprehensive care models, population dynamics, and the effect of specialized rehabilitation services within the continuum of care. Specific topics include:

  • Epidemiology of cancer and its emerging relevance to rehabilitation practice.
  • Regulatory environment impacting the delivery of rehabilitation care and services.
  • Emerging initiatives in developing models for the delivery of integrated services.

Cancer Rehabilitation: An Emerging Area of Practice

One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Cancer treatment is unique in that it occurs over a protracted timeline and introduces a number of different modalities to combat disease. Each intervention along the continuum of care introduces potential side effects that have a deleterious impact on function and often impact multiple body systems. Some treatment side effects can persist for a lifetime, others do not present until years after the treatment is complete. The nature of anti-neoplastic treatment lends itself to uncertainties regarding the magnitude and chronicity of side effects and their risk for diminishing function. Rehabilitation medicine provides a variety of value added services that contribute to the prevention, mitigation, and alleviation of many negative impairments associated with cancer treatment. This webinar will discuss the important role that rehabilitation plays for individuals with cancer and will postulate that the future holds a greater need for rehabilitation services as the number of cancer survivors increases in the population.
