Product Description

The baby boomer generation is living longer, and in the elderly population little attention has been paid to its substance abuse disorders. Currently available criteria are likely to significantly underestimate the prevalence of substance abuse among elderly persons because they are developed and validated in younger samples. Alcohol use or misuse, over-the-counter drugs, and depression along with other mental health disorders are often not diagnosed in the elderly population for those persons who reside in the community. Other social factors such as death of a spouse/family member, loneliness, loss of memory, and nutritional status/limitation are often overlooked and often associated with the aging process until a physical and/or behavioral health problem presents itself to family members, friends, or professionals.

Webinar participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the need and importance for an older adult assessment instrument to gather pertinent information about the older adult to ensure that the appropriate services are provided.
  2. Explain the need for the development of a person-centered plan that includes the person served, family member/support system, and care coordinator.
  3. Explain healthcare coverage, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurances that may impact health services delivery.
  4. Discuss end-of-life planning, including advance directives and dual power of attorney regarding the financial management of the person served.
  5. Discuss the many ways that the older adult could be abused or exploited and why there is need for criminal background checks on all direct personnel providing services for the older adult.
